Follow-up Programs for Survivors of Childhood Cancer

More than 250,000 children, teens, and adults in the US are survivors of childhood cancer. The number of survivors is increasing dramatically due to the rising number of diagnoses and improved treatments. The surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy used to cure children can affect growing bodies and developing minds. Survivors need expert follow-up from trained professionals to improve their quality of life through early detection and intervention for late effects from treatment.

While treatments for childhood cancer are improving, care for survivors is lagging behind. There is huge variability in the services provided by institutions to survivors of childhood cancer. To help survivors find the services they need, a survey of major children's hospitals across the nation was conducted to find out which ones provided comprehensive services to children, teens, and adults who are survivors of childhood cancer.

The institutions on this list met the following criteria:

  1. The institution has a clinic specifically designed to treat survivors of childhood cancer.

  2. The clinic has a clinic coordinator (usually a nurse practitioner with special interest and skills in treating survivors).

  3. Survivors see a physician or nurse practitioner who is educated and experienced in treating the special needs of survivors with childhood cancer.

  4. The clinic refers survivors to specialists (endocrinologists, cardiologists, etc.) who are experienced in treating the special needs of survivors of childhood cancer.

The following list provides survivors with options for meeting their unique medical and psychosocial needs.
